Great news! Our courts have been cleaned in preparation for the 2017 season and it is always a joy to play on a freshly cleaned surface. Inevitably over time moss and dirt accumulate on hard outdoor courts affecting the playing surface and grip, so our thanks once again to The Complete Tennis Court Service for carrying out this work.
So far the weather in 2017 has been pretty terrible but play has continued when possible, and our club sessions on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings are now in full swing. The sun even shone this Saturday and it was good to see the all the courts in full use.
For our members, the Tennis AGM is on Wednesday 22nd March at 8pm - do come along if you can.
We'll be holding a Mixed Doubles tournament on Sunday 16th October at 10am. This is to honour former member Cliff Thomspon (we were not able to have the usual Tennis vs Bowls tournament this year).
All members welcome!
On 11th September we held a tournament to remember Spital member Liz Bird who passed away earlier this year after suffering from cancer. 19 players including guests from neighbouring Netherseal and other supporters took part, and £143.50 was raised in aid of St Giles Hospice.
Jan Webb and Nathan Ensor were the winners, with Angela Tallett being awarded the Presidents Trophy. Thanks to Anne Timmis and Belnda Foster for organising the event and everyone who supported it.
... to our coaches Rachael and Lee on the birth of their son!

Spital member Annabel Arnold, her daughter, son and nephew recently spent a week walking the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. The Kokoda trail played an important role during the second world war when Japan was trying to invade Australia. Annabel's grandfather was one of the soldiers involved so the trek was not only physically challenging but also a memorable personal experience for the family.
On Tuesday 24th November at 7pm at the Club, Annabel will present an illustrated talk to share her experiences. This will last around 45 minutes plus questions, followed by festive light refreshments/drinks. There will also be opportunity to make a donation to the Kokoda Hospital.
All our members are welcome and do bring partners/friends.
Our next tournament is for Veterans (over 40s) on Sunday 8th November starting at 10.30am. It will be mixed doubles, pairs to be drawn on the day. If you are a member and are eligible to play, do come down!
We recently had our courts professionally cleaned, improving grip and bounce and look.
It's normal for a thin layer of moss to gradually build up on outdoor hard courts, and while this is fine during the summer months, it can become slippery when wet. So it's great that the cleaning has taken place, and our members will be able to play safely through the winter.
What did our members say?
"The courts have been cleaned up and look great, I think you'll be impressed next time you come down."
"The courts are looking good and play really well."
